Case Studies

A recent study by Macmillan Cancer Support found that 9 out of 10 cancer patients' households experience loss of income as a direct result of cancer.

Mr. M was diagnosed with Mesothelioma which was causing him problems with severe coughing and affecting his mobility and breathing.

His wife was his main carer. Their business had recently failed and they had very little income and were staying with their son and his family.

Mr. M was referred to the Group by his Macmillan Nurse and despite living 40 miles from the ASCG's base in Wallsend, a home visit was arranged. After an initial benefit check a claim was made for Attendance Allowance which was awarded at the higher rate of £77.45 a week, and it was identified that his wife was able to claim Carers Allowance of £58.45 a week. Claims were also successfully made for Industrial Injuries Benefit of £154.10 per week and he received a lump sum payment under the Workers Compensation Scheme of £22,483.00.

Mr. M was given a list of independent specialist solicitors and chose one to help him pursue additional legal compensation.
